What Procedures Can Dental Assistants Help With?

When most people picture a dental office, they usually think of the dentist first—and rightly so, given that they are normally the face of the practice and engine that keeps things running! But did you know that dental assistants are often the ones right there next to them, working closely to ensure each patient receives excellent care? While they aren’t dentists themselves, they still have the knowledge and training to assist with plenty of procedures. Here are just a few examples.

Dental Exams & X-Rays

Every routine checkup starts with careful preparation, and dental assistants are usually involved even before the patient sits down. They review medical histories, set up instruments, and make sure the patient is comfortable once they arrive and are brought back. Radiology is also an important component of the job; dental assistants can take and develop dental X-rays, which give both the dentist and patient a clear view of what’s happening beneath the surface.

Fillings & Restorative Care

When a patient needs a dental filling, a crown, or another type of restoration, dental assistants can help keep everything running smoothly, as these treatments are carried out in multiple steps. They can prepare materials, hand off instruments to the dentist, and use suction and water to keep a patient’s mouth dry and clean. All these tasks might seem small, but they allow the dentist to stay focused on the procedure and lighten their mental load. Dental assistants are also often the ones responsible for providing aftercare instructions and answering questions.

Root Canals & Tooth Extractions

Nobody likes hearing that they need a root canal or a tooth extraction, and even just the name of these treatments being brought up is enough to make a patient nervous. A dental assistant’s calming presence can go a long way during these procedures. They’ll also help with things like preparing instruments, administering topical anesthetics, and supporting the dentist in other ways as they work. Afterward, they normally explain post-procedure care, including how to manage discomfort and what to eat during recovery.

Emergency Dentistry

There are few things as alarming as suffering a dental emergency and being unsure about what’s going to happen when you arrive at the dentist’s office. Dental assistants play a key role in helping with dental emergencies and ensuring that patients are comfortable as their injuries are treated. And before you’re sent home, they’ll be certain that you know exactly what to do to keep any pain minimized and ensure your smile stays protected as it heals.

The bottom line is, dental assistants are vital members of any dental team, supporting dentists and patients alike through everything from simple exams to complex care. Without these jacks-of-all-trades, dental care would certainly be lacking!
