Wrapping up your training as a dental assistant is an exciting milestone, but the next step is just as important: finding the right practice to start your career. A great employer can help you build confidence, grow your skills, and ensure that above all else, you actually enjoy coming in to work each day. That said, a poor fit can leave you feeling stressed out and stuck! As you begin searching for your first job, here are some key signs that a dentist might also be a great boss.

1. They Invest in Training

Any dentist worth their salt knows that a well-trained team is just as important as their own training. A capable team improves the overall patient experience in numerous ways. Check to see if the office pays for continuing education, supports certifications such as expanded duties or radiology, and offers chances to learn new procedures. Practices that invest in their assistants usually want them to stay and grow, which is a situation you should want to find yourself in!

2. The Team Is Supportive

Be sure to pay close attention to how the staff treats you during your interview (or if you have the opportunity to shadow). Do the team members smile, introduce themselves to you, and seem to work well together? Do they treat the patients with respect and courtesy? Friendly and clear communication is a strong sign of a healthy workplace, while obviously low morale, visible tension, or a high turnover rate can indicate trouble.

3. The Job Expectations Are Clear

Any great employer will be upfront about your duties, schedule, pay, and benefits. They should be able to explain what a typical day looks like, how performance is reviewed, and what opportunities exist for raises. Remember, vague answers about hours or pay can lead to quite a bit of frustration later. Offices that communicate openly from the start tend to continue doing so after you’re hired, which in turn will keep you a happy camper.

4. The Office is Clean & Organized

You should also take note of the practice’s environment. A clean, well-organized office with up-to-date equipment and clean, sanitary surfaces and instruments shows that the dentist takes quality care seriously. You’ll also want to see how the dentist and team talk about patients. The best employers treat patients with kindness and respect, in addition to their fellow teammates.

Remember, the right dental practice will value your skills, support your growth, and treat you like an important part of the team. That said, trust your instincts, and choose an employer who sets you up for long-term success!
