Starting dental assistant school is an exciting step toward your brand-new career, but it’s perfectly normal to feel a little nervous. Between learning a large number of new dental terms, mastering all of the hands-on skills needed, and balancing classes with your social life, it might seem at first like keeping things organized will be impossible. That said, things aren’t hopeless! Here are some tips to keep in mind that’ll ensure you’re set up for success.
Connect with Classmates & Instructors
Your instructors will have real-world dental experience that they use to guide you, and they ultimately want to see you succeed, so don’t hesitate to ask questions or ask for extra guidance when something doesn’t click. Of course, they can also serve as a means for networking once you’ve finished up your program. Your classmates can also be just as valuable!
Study Consistently Every Day; Don’t Cram
Dental terminology, anatomy, and even seemingly small things like charting symbols can sometimes feel as complicated as learning a new language. Rather than cramming the night before an exam, try reviewing your notes for an hour each day the whole week beforehand. Flashcards, practice quizzes, and study groups with classmates can also help the material stick.
Take Advantage of Hands-on Practice
One of the best parts of dental assistant school is the incredible amount of hands-on training you’ll receive in a real office setting. That said, don’t just go through the motions and try to coast your way through these sessions. They’re the perfect time to ask questions, practice techniques, and see firsthand exactly how things are done. Simply put, the more effort you put into hands-on practice now, the more confident you’ll feel once you’re working with real patients!
Take Great Care of Yourself
It’s easy to put your own needs on the back burner when you’re balancing school with work and family responsibilities, but you won’t be your best self if you aren’t taking care of yourself. Be sure to get enough sleep before class, eat well, and give yourself time for breaks when you need them. Dental assisting is much easier when you’re taking care of your physical and mental well-being. Of course, you’ll also be able to better absorb all of the knowledge your instructors are sharing if you’re well-rested.
The bottom line is, dental assistant school may seem a bit challenging or can overwhelm you at times, but with the right preparation and mindset, it’s absolutely manageable and incredibly rewarding once you reach graduation!
