When many people think about a career in dental assisting, they picture the person who hovers close by the dentist, handing them instruments and assisting with certain parts of procedures. Though this is certainly a large part of the job, it’s really only the beginning! In fact, dental assistants are vital members of every practice, and assist with a wide range of responsibilities, ranging from patient care and education to clinical efficiency. Here’s a closer look at some of them.

The Dentist’s Right-Hand

Dental assistants are often chairside or close by the operatory, supporting the dentist during procedures by providing an extra set of hands. In this role, you might prepare, sterilize, and organize equipment, assist during surgical procedures, take dental impressions and X-rays, and help ensure infection control and safety protocols are followed.

This takes an incredible amount of burden off the dentist’s shoulders and keeps things running smoothly and efficiently. This also means that no two days are ever going to feel exactly the same, if you’re a fan of breaking up the monotony!

Patient Advocate & Comfort Guide

For many patients, visiting the dentist can be intimidating, considering the sights and sounds of the office, the potential for pain and sensitivity, and dental phobias from past, negative experiences. Dental assistants often serve as a reassuring voice and calming presence throughout the appointment. You’ll be able to greet patients and mentally prepare them for treatment, explain procedures in easy-to-understand terms, and provide post-op instructions and clarity.

By building trust and creating a positive experience, you directly influence a patient’s willingness to return and keep up with their oral health!

Behind-the-Scenes Organizer

A successful dental practice runs on teamwork and organization, and dental assistants are often at the center of it all. It’s common for some responsibilities to include things like maintaining patient records, scheduling appointments, managing inventory and supplies, and coordinating with hygienists and the front desk staff. Your efficiency will help the whole team stay on schedule, which is something that patients can certainly appreciate, too!

The bottom line is, dental assistants wear many hats—and their impact is felt in every corner of the practice. If you think you might thrive in this type of career, don’t hesitate to make the change.
