And as the population continues to age, one group you can expect to often see in the dental chair is older adults. That said, senior patients can sometimes bring a unique set of challenges when it comes to their care, from their medical histories to physical limitations and even heightened anxiety. Learning how to navigate these challenges is an important part of being a great dental assistant! Here’s what you need to know.

Senior Patients Have Unique Oral Health Needs

Aging brings several oral health changes that can complicate treatment and require a more thorough approach. Dry mouth, which is frequently caused by many medications, can significantly increase the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Periodontal disease is widespread among older adults and, if left unmanaged, can lead to bone loss and tooth loss over time.

Older patients are also far more likely than younger ones to have complex medical histories, including multiple chronic conditions and multiple medications, some of which can influence treatment. As a dental assistant, one of your responsibilities is to help ensure that the patient’s health history is current before every appointment.

Adjust Your Communication Style Accordingly

Clear communication is always important in dental assisting, and it becomes especially crucial when working with older patients. Some seniors experience hearing loss, cognitive changes, or slower processing speed, but a few simple adjustments on your part can make a big difference.

Try to speak clearly and at a moderate pace, and avoid talking while you’re looking away or with your face partially obscured. Also, always speak directly to the patient rather than defaulting to a family member or caregiver who may have accompanied them. Treating older adults with dignity and respect goes a long way toward building trust and putting them at ease!

Be Mindful of Physical & Mental Comfort

Many senior patients deal with physical challenges that can make a routine dental appointment uncomfortable. Things like arthritis, chronic back or joint pain, balance issues, and limited mobility are all worth keeping in mind. If a patient uses a walker, a cane, or a wheelchair, be ready to assist them. And throughout the appointment, check in with them; a simple “how are you doing?” can alert you to their discomfort so you can quickly help.

Dental anxiety is also common across all age groups, but for older patients, it can be especially intense. Some may have had difficult experiences with dental care earlier in life, while others may feel overwhelmed by the clinical environment. Your demeanor as a dental assistant plays a huge role in shaping the patient’s experience. A calm, friendly attitude and a brief, honest explanation of what to expect before each step can dramatically reduce anxiety!

About Green Country School of Dental Assisting

At Green Country School of Dental Assisting, our team is dedicated to helping students in Claremore and the surrounding areas build fulfilling careers through our dental assisting program.
